U.S. told to drop internet gambling ban Posted by: Joe Thursday March 25th, 2004 The Washington Times
BRUSSELS, Belgium, March 25 (UPI) -- The World Trade Organization has told the United States its restriction of Internet gambling violates global trade pacts.
Washington said it would fight the decision, which could set the stage for offshore Web-based gambling companies to freely operate in the United States, the Wall Street Journal said. Each state sets its own gambling laws, but the Justice Department maintains gambling on the Internet is illegal.
In a decision on a case from the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda, the WTO ruled gambling was covered under global service-sector agreements and the United States must stop trying to thwart gambling companies' business.
The WTO's ruling also set off alarm bells in Las Vegas, where most big U.S. casinos have been wary of attempting to enter the huge Internet gambling market for fear of breaking U.S. laws.
